O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she experienced significant defeats in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put to the bottom three or second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were awed by her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the third place in the future. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
